Late controversy sees Ladies succumb to title favourites

Royal Wootton Bassett Town Ladies fell to their second defeat in a row as they were beaten 4-1 away against South West Regional Women's Football League Premier Division favourites Ilminster Town.

The result was one that flattered Ilminster, who profited from controversial decisons that led to the award of a soft free kick and penalty from which two of their goals were scored, much to Bassett's frustration.

Ilminster had triumphed 4-0 when the teams met in Wiltshire earlier in the campaign. However, while matching that tally of goals this time around, the difference between the teams was much smaller this time around.

Maisie Parker gave Ilminster the lead after 18 minutes, scoring from a free kick awarded for an offence which Bassett felt was not a foul.

But Bassett were back on terms ten minutes before half time when Libby Davies received Holly Baker's pass, danced past two defenders and rounded the home 'keeper before finishing into the top corner.

Bassett were unable to get to the interval on level terms though as Colette Martin grabbed her first of the afternoon two minutes before the break.

The second half was predominantly a tight affair as both teams went in search of the crucial next goal. Bassett certainly had their chances with leading scorer Davies proving to be a particular threat to the Ilminster defence.

Eventually - with eight minutes to go - the game's fourth goal arrived. And it fell to Ilminster whose leading scorer Jodi Cornwall made it 3-1 from the penalty spot after another questionable decision went against the visitors.

Martin then wrapped things up four minutes later to put the game beyond Bassett, who fall to fifth in the table courtesy of results elsewhere.
