Heavy defeat on Friday night under lights

Action in the Corsham Print Wiltshire Senior League kicked-off this weekend on Friday night under the lights at Malmesbury Victoria. In front of a bumper crowd of 107 the young Malmesbury side turned in their best performance of the season to hammer a Royal Wootton Bassett Town Development side who, until Friday had been in a rich vein of form. The young Malmesbury side turned on the style scoring some superb individual strikes and also some well worked team goals. They went 1-0 in front when they broke from midfield and a cross come shot from wide on the right wing from Dan Scull sailed over the Bassett keeper to lodge in the very top corner of the net to make it 1-0 to the home side. Soon after it was 2-0 as David Biggs broke free from his markers to score from the edge of the area. Royal Wootton Bassett pulled one back when Harrison Gough headed in from a corner and looked like it was game on. Royal Wootton Bassett were creating more chances than the home side, but the end product was missing as they either shot weakly, tried to overplay and run the ball into the net or were denied by some fine keeping by Travis Wood in the Malmesbury goal. At the other end the contrast in clinical finishing was to be seen as Malmesbury seemed to score with every attack and extended their lead with further goals from Biggs and Scull to make it 4-1 just before half-time. With the clock showing a good five minutes over the normal 45 there was still time for Royal Wootton Bassett to pull one back with Harrison Gough repeating his first goal with a header from another corner. 4-2 at the break to the home side and the potential for a lot more goals in the second half.

However, the goal rush died down in the second period but the best goal of the night did come after the restart and it again went to the home side. Just when Royal Wootton Bassett thought they had cleared their lines to the half way line Scull fired an unstoppable shot from just in the Bassett half which sailed into the top corner of the net to send the home crowd wild and wrap up the points for a buoyant Malmesbury side. To rub salt into the wounds George Stone added a further goal to make it 6-2 to Malmesbury. Royal Wootton Bassett Town continued to create chances of their own but unlike the home side they continued to lack the clinical edge and in the end were well beaten on the night.
