07 Apr 2013 - Old Town United A (A)

The last game of the season brings Wootton Bassett Whites to the Croft Sports Centre for the return fixture with Old Town United, whom they only played a few short weeks ago. James takes the first stint in goal on a bright and sunny start to the day for this lunchtime kick-off.

Bassett start well and have the better of the early exchanges. Jordan controls a high ball nicely and plays a great ball into space in front of Zak. Zak chases in on the Old Town keeper but can't quite reach the ball before it goes out. Old Town clear from the goal kick but the ball finds its way to James in goal. A quick clearance to Zach in midfield gives him time to make another great pass to Zak through the middle but this time the Old Town keeper is too quick off his line and just makes the interception.

Old Town press back up the pitch and win a corner. Brad makes a great defensive header from the crossed ball and Zak picks up the ball and runs almost the length of the pitch, beating tackle after tackle, before finally being fouled and winning a free-kick. Jordan delivers a trade-mark cross into the box where Zak's shot is deflected to Zach who keeps his cool and slots home.

Bassett 1 – 0

Bassett keep the momentum up and continue to press forward. Matt wins a fine tackle in midfield and makes a great pass to Zak who is roaming at the side of the box. Zak crosses across the face of the Old Town goal but Brad can't quite reach the ball to poke it in.

Old Town apply some pressure of their own and work the ball up the left hand side before delivering into the heart of the Bassett area. James can't hold the cross and and ball comes back through a crowded area and Old Town get their equaliser.

Bassett 1 – 1

After the restart Harry makes a great tackle in midfield and plays in Justin rushing forward. Justin delivers a great cross into the Old Town box and Zak can't quite get there but Todd races in at the far post to connect sweetly with the ball but his shot is just wide.

Scott wins the ball deep in defence and starts a move down the Wootton Bassett left. Justin takes up the play and passes to Zak. An Old Town defender wins the ball but Zak picks his pocket and wins it straight back. Zak makes room to shoot but hits the post and the ball comes out to Justin for the follow up but his shot sails just over the bar.

An Old Town attack is broken up by Niall and Ollie who delivers the ball to Todd who, after a short run, clips a cross to Zak in the box who finishes nicely for the Whites second of the game.

Bassett 2 – 1

Old Town come back at Bassett again and Brad makes a fine clearance from inside the Bassett area which is picked up by Zak. He makes another great run and gets 1-on-1 with the Old Town keeper but his shot is oh so narrowly wide of the post.

Half Time 2 – 1

Ollie takes the place between the sticks for the second half.

Old Town start the second half the brighter and immediately put the Bassett defence under intense pressure. The pressure shows and a rare mixup at the back gives an Old Town striker a chance and the ball is put past a despairing Ollie to level the scores again.

Bassett 2 – 2

Old Town are on the attack again and keep probing the Bassett defences for another opportunity. An Old Town forward goes down in the box and the ref awards the penalty much to the dismay of the Bassett players. The penalty is struck well but Ollie is more than a match for it and makes a fine save to his left.

Matthew is beavering away at the back and making important tackles as Old Town try again to break through, and Niall is rounding up the loose balls and delivering them forward as Bassett try to fight back.

But, at the moment Old Town are on the up and break from a goal kick and flood forward. A great pass puts their attacker in and he rifles a shot toward goal but Ollie makes a fantastic one-handed save to his left to deny him and keep the scores level.

Bassett work hard to get the passes flowing. James wins the ball at the back and makes a neat little run before passing to Zak. Zak is tacled but the ball comes out to Todd who delivers a high looping shot which completely clears the scrambling Old Town keeper and nestles in the back of the net.

Bassett 3 – 2

Bassett don't want to lose the lead again and are on the attack again straight away. Jordan brings a loose ball under control nicely and delivers to Zach. Zach passes to Todd who sees Zak in space and plays him in. Zak gets his shot off but it is partially blocked and again loops up and over the Old Town keeper and into the goal.

Bassett 4 – 2

Wootton Bassett are in control now and really getting the passes going. Niall breaks up play and gives tha ball to Brad who makes a weighted pass through into space in front of the Old Town goal. Zak out-sprints the chasing defender and beats him to the ball before calmly slotting the ball past the onrushing Old Town keeper.

Bassett 5 – 2

However, Old Town don't let their heads go down and are quickly on the attack, passing their way through the Bassett defence. The striker's first shot beats Ollie but rebounds off of the post and it falls to another forward who shoots past Ollie to score.

Bassett 5 – 3

Another fine display from the boys again and a great way to round off and excellent debut season. The whole team worked hard today and ultimately deserved the win over Old Town. For a solid first half and a great display in goal for the second, Man of the Match was awarded to Oliver Cameron.

Managers comments. A well deserved win to end our first season. Everyone worked well as a team and got their passes together. The turning point in the game was the penalty save from Ollie. Well done everyone. Get ready for next season at 11-a-side
