23 Sep 2012 - FC Calne Rovers (A)

Wootton Bassett White U13's (9v9) v FC Calne Rovers U13 Sunday 23rd September. Beaverbrook Sports Facility (Away) On a cold and rainy morning the new Wootton Bassett White team travelled to the Beaverbrook Sports Facility for their first game of the 2012/13 season against FC Calne Rovers. The game began quite evenly and Wootton Bassett put together some good passing moves early on. The first chance of the game fell to FC Calne but a great save from Ryan in goal kept the scores even. Wootton Bassett then enjoyed a good period of possession and pressured the FC Calne defence but it was FC Calne who scored first with a quick breakaway goal through the middle and a fine finish. Bassett 0 - 1 Wootton Bassett didn't let the goal get them down and continued to put together some nice passes in pursuit of an equaliser. A nice run by Zach with a nicely timed layoff allowed Justin to shoot past the FC Calne keeper for a superb first goal for both himself and the team. 1 - 1 However, FC Calne were to strike back almost straight away when free kick was conceded by Wootton Bassett a little way inside their own half. A direct strike on goal bounced awkwardly in front of Ryan and an incoming FC Calne player was able to scoop up the loose ball and tap it into the net. Bassett 1 - 2 A good corner from Jordan on 18 minutes saw Zach come close to an equaliser which was well saved. Wootton Bassett continued to work hard with Matthew, Jordan and James working hard to defend the FC Calne attacks and Grant and Ollie working well in midfield. A lovely pass from Grant nearly saw Brad through on goal again and Jordan's cross from the resulting corner allowed Justin to nip in at the near post to level the scores again on the stroke of half time. Half Time 2 - 2 The conditions were worsening as the morning went on and early in the second half, in the torrential rain, another FC Calne breakaway was superbly intercepted by Matthew to keep the scores level. Wootton Bassett enjoyed a spell of sustained pressure and spent long periods in the FC Calne half of the field. Ollie had taken his place in goal in the second half and stood up well to an FC Calne breakaway when he was 1-on-1. Shortly afterward some nice linkup play between James, Jordan, and Justin down the right had Justin's shot just saved at the near post by the FC Calne keeper. Almost immediately Grants shot from the edge of the area went narrowly wide of the post. Then, Brad played an inch-perfect pass through the middle of the FC Calne defence to Justin who unselfishly passed back to Ben who finished the move superbly with a beautiful dipping shot over the FC Calne keeper's outstretched arms. Bassett 3 - 2 Wootton Bassett continued to pressure the FC Calne defence and Brad was unlucky not to score when his shot from a corner whistled narrowly over the bar Result Wootton Bassett Whites 3 FC Calne Rovers 2 A fine team performance from all of the boys in their first competitive game together resulted in a well deserved win away from home. For his fine runs down the right, great passing, and two goals, Man of the Match was awarded to Justin Hemedy but congratulations to the whole team for their first win of the season. Well deserved. Manager's comments: A first class team effort where everyone gave their best. I couldn't ask for any more from any player. The rain didn't make it easy for us but all the players kept going until the final whistle blew. Wootton Bassett Whites: Zach Bunce, Ollie Cameron, James Evans, Justin Hemedy, Jordan Langford, Grant Moynihan, Matthew Nicholls, Ben Pugsley, Brad Sealey, Ryan Welsman Clarke
