09 Mar 2013 - Old Town United A (H)

After several postponements Wootton Bassett Whites eventually manage to get their game underway against Old Town United A. There's a bit of rain in the air under the grey overcast sky. The pitch is very wet and very heavy and a large ‘damp patch' requires significant forking before kick off to try and clear some standing water.

From the kick off it's Wootton Bassett who apply the early pressure. Todd makes a fast run down the left and lays off to Justin in the Old Town box. Justin is tackled before he can get a shot away but the ball comes out to Matthew whose long range effort is just over the bar.

The next attack comes down the left again and its Jordan who takes the ball to the left edge of the Old Town area and gets his shot off but it's into the side netting.

A free kick is awarded to Wootton Bassett for handball half way inside the Old Town half. Jordan steps up and launches a rifle shot straight at goal, over the full stretch Old Town keeper and into the net.

Bassett 1 – 0

Old Town take inspiration from the goal against them and enjoy the better of the play for a period but Brad and James are alert to the incursions and keep Old Town at bay. However, as Bassett try to push up Old Town break through and, despite Matthews best efforts to intercept the super fast Old Town attacker, he is able to level the scores.

Bassett 1 – 1

A fairly even passage of play follows with both teams trying to get a passing game going but being thwarted by the heavy pitch. The balls not rolling as far as expected and passes are not reaching the intended locations for both sides. Several times a high balls just plops to the ground – not bouncing at all.

The Whites continue to try and press high up the field but are caught out again as Old Town break quickly through the middle. Niall is off his line quickly to clear the attack.

Old Town get on top and frequently test the Bassett defensive line. Once again they beat the trap but Niall does enough to make the Old Town striker shoot wide.

Soon afterward Old Town are on the up again and have the Bassett defence on the turn. Niall makes a great save from the Old Town shot but the ball falls back out to another Old Town forward. A goal mouth scramble ensues with the ball ricocheting around the legs of defenders and attackers alike before popping out to an attacker in a little bit of space who shoots Old Town into the lead.

Bassett 1 – 2

Half Time 1 – 2

Wootton Bassett start the second half the stronger and put together a really nice passing move from the back. Justin uses his skill to beat several Old Town players and passes to Jordan on the left. Jordan makes a neat pass to Todd in range but his shot is saved. Bassett collect the ball from the goal kick and Zach passes out to Jordan out on the left wing again. Jordan unleashes a looping shot that the Old Town keeper is only just able to tip onto the crossbar. The ball comes back out to Zach who rifles the ball back in first time but the shot is just wide.

Old Town play out of defence but are unable to convert to a shot on goal. However, a mixup from the goal kick is cleared to an Old Town forward litering with intent and he returns the ball, with interest, over Nialls head into the net.

Bassett 1 – 3

Wootton Bassett earn another free kick from another hand ball in almost exactly the same position as previously. Jordan steps again with another ‘Langford Launcher' but this time the Old Time keeper is able to push the shot away just under the crossbar. The ball comes out to Brad who slams it back in but it is saved on the line by an Old Town defender but Justin is on hand to hammer the ball home.

Bassett 2 – 3

A short time later, Old Town get a passing move going through the deteriorating pitch and, despite the best efforts of the Whites defenders, are able to push the ball past Niall for their 4th of the morning.

Bassett 2 – 4

Bassett aren't out of it yet though and start to up their game to try and get back into the game. Ollie gets a good passing move going with a ball to Scott who brings in Harry on the right. Harry is forced out towards the wing but wins a corner. Jordan delivers the ball into the 6-yard area where it is met by Todd at the far post who makes no mistake and slots home.

Bassett 3 – 4

Bassett are definately on top now and slip and slide their way towards the Old Town goal searching for an equaliser. The game is getting really exciting now and Zak shoots narrowly wide on the turn from a nice pass by Ollie. Todd collects the ball inside the Bassett half from the goalkeepers kick and passes to Brad in space. Brad delivers a perfectly weighted pass through the gloop to Zach who drives the ball into the net to make it 4-4.

Bassett 4 – 4

The Whites are on top now and searching for a winner in the dying minutes. Jordan makes a crafty chip over the Old Town defence to Zak who rushes through to collect but his shot is just over the bar.
