07 Oct 2012 - North Bristol FDC (A)

The League Cup draw gods saw fit to pit Wootton Bassett White's against North Bristol FDC at their home in the fabulous Wise Campus facility in Bristol. On a bright and sunny morning another first for the new team saw them playing on a 3G all-weather pitch. North Bristol FDC are currently unbeaten as U13 Division 1 league leaders and had 6 coaches and 7 substitutes on hand. Wootton Bassett Whites new that this was going to be an uphill fight.

All 11 players were available and Zach took turn in goal for the first half.

Wootton Bassett absorbed some early pressure, battling hard in defence and trying to keep possession when it was won. This pressure eventually resulted in a North Bristol corner which was well cleared by Jordan. The return shot however unfortunately deflected off a defenders head to push the ball just pass a despairing Zach. Bassett 0 – 1.

Wootton Bassett came under a sustained period of pressure after the first goal and weren't able to get their passing game going but the boys defending kept the North Bristol shots to long-range which Zach was able to deal with comfortably or were going wide or over the bar.

Wootton Bassett were able to break down the left when Todd played a nice ball through to Brad but the North Bristol goalkeeper was alert and came out to capture the ball. Grant, Justin, and Ollie were busy in the midfield, battling hard for any ball that came their way and Matthew made several important interceptions at the back. Zach made several fine stops in goal.

A North Bristol attack was broken up by Justin as their forwards flooded forward. A corner resulted which was headed on to a North Bristol forward to volley home. Bassett 0 – 2.

James and Jordan were chasing and defending hard as the North Bristol attacks came in wave after wave. Positive work from Nic in midfield brought in Zac who played a defence splitting pass to Todd who, unfortunately, was ruled just offside.

Wootton Bassett were now starting to push forward and were stringing passes together but North Bristol regained possession and just beat the offside trap as 3 attackers broke clear. The shot to the top right corner left Zach with no chance. Bassett 0 – 3.

North Bristol continued to attack the Wootton Bassett goal and it seemed that every clearance Bassett made was going straight to a North Bristol player. One of these clearances fell to an attacker who shot from range and Zach saved well but, the loose ball was pounced on by another forward to shoot home. Bassett 0 – 4.

Wootton Bassett continued to be industrious and a throw in from James was nicely flicked on by Justin to Todd who managed to get a shot off but which was saved at the near-post.

Half Time Bassett 0 – 4.

The first North Bristol attack of the second half was thwarted by a great tackle by Matthew and Justin was now battling alongside him in defence as Zach took his position in midfield. A North Bristol corner early on was well saved and cleared by James who replaced Zach between the sticks for the second half.

North Bristol pieced together a nice passing move and James raced out to close down the advancing attacker but he was able to make a simple pass for a team mate to tap in. Bassett 0 – 5.

Shortly afterward a misplaced goal kick went straight to a North Bristol player whose first-time shot went straight back to the Wootton Bassett goal for their sixth. Bassett 0 – 6.

Nic and Zak were still trying to get something going and nice interplay nearly enabled Zach to break away but the move was broken up as they were seemingly outnumbered by North Bristol players. They were able to break again and a finely weighted cross just cleared James' outstretched hands and found the head of a North Bristol forward to make it seven. Bassett 0 – 7.

North Bristol continued to pile on the pressure and soon afterward forced a corner. Jordan defended the corner well with a fine header but this fell to another North Bristol player. His strong shot was parried by James but went back to the striker to score. Bassett 0 – 8.

Bassett continued to try and frustrate North Bristol but a high looping shot/cross nearly caught James out. He managed to save only for a North Bristol forward to nip in and tuck the rebound away. Bassett 0 – 9.

Wootton Bassett weren't giving up yet though. Zach made a delightful run, beating 3 defenders, and passed to Todd who played in Nic who was nearly able to break through before being intercepted. North Bristol surged forward again but Jordan forced the ball wide and out of danger. Seconds later though a wide pass saw James drawn out of position as he chased a loose ball. He was beaten to it by a North Bristol player who was able to pass back across the box for his teammate to score into an empty net. Bassett 0 – 10.

Result –North Bristol FDC 10 – Wootton Bassett Whites 0

Considering that, only a few weeks ago, Wootton Bassett Whites had to forfeit a league fixture because we didn't have enough registered players, and had to ‘borrow' Under 12 players for 1 of the other games, the boys have come a long way. Only 11 players meant no substitutes and everyone worked really hard for the full 70 minutes. A positive attitude was maintained throughout and ALL of the boys continued to run and battle right to the final whistle and the final scoreline was no disgrace to any of them.

Managers comments: Well done to everyone who battled well throughout. The scoreline doesn't reflect the hard work that each and every one of the team put into the game. Man of the Match today goes to Zak Thompson

Wootton Bassett Whites : Zach Bunce, Ollie Cameron, James Evans, Todd Goddard, Justin Hemedy, Jordan Langford, Grant Moynihan, Matthew Nicholls, Brad Sealey, Nic Thompson, Zak Thompson (Capt)
