16 Dec 2012 - Stratton Youth B (A)

Wootton Bassett Whites travelled to Cirencester for the return fixture against Stratton Youth B. A bright and sunny afternoon but there had been a lot of rain in the preceding hours and the pitch and surrounding areas were very wet and sticky underfoot.

The Whites welcomed new signing Niall to the team who took his place in midfield and Ryan played in goal today.

It was a rather scrappy start to the game due to the heavy pitch and both sides struggled to retain any decent ball. Bassett were trying to push up the field and put the Stratton defence under pressure and Jordan, Ollie, and Matthew were winning a good share of the balls in the middle of the pitch.

Nial delivered a nice ball from the right to James who gets the ball under control at the edge of the box before sliding a pass through to Justin. Justin keeps his cool and slots his shot wide of the advancing Stratton keeper into the net for the first of the game.

Bassett 1 – 0

After the restart Bassett win the ball at the back and Jordan lays off to Todd who is off down the left hand side. A pass to James is moved on to an onrushing Justin who plays a nice 1-2 with James but the resulting shot is straight at the Stratton keeper.

Matthew is busy winning ball and Brad covers on the right, breaking up any Stratton attacks. Ollie picks up a ball from Brad who makes a run and gives a fine pass to James who just has time to take a touch and shoot. The Stratton keeper saves and the rebound falls to Jordan but the keeper recovers well to save Jordans shot.

Stratton build a useful break down the right and Brad forces the attacker out wide. The attacker still manages to get his shot off and Ryan has to save well at his near post.

A Bassett throw shortly after is picked up by Todd who makes a great run down the left and makes a nice pass to Justin at the edge of the box. Justin holds the ball up and passes back to Todd who had continued his run through the Stratton defence but his shot is saved.

The Whites continue to press on for a second and win a corner. Jordans great corner falls to James at the back post. A sideways pass to Brad is layed off to Nial in a bit more space but his shot is narrowly wide.

Stratton immediately break down the right and for a moment look clean through but Ollie races back and is quick to intercept the Stratton forward.

Brad makes a great tackle and wins the ball in midfield. He passes out wide to Jordan in space in the corner. Jordan delivers a lovely cross to Todd in the Stratton area but his powerful shot is saved again by the Stratton keeper.

Stratton try to build an attack out of defence but Todd is to quick and makes a lovely tackle in midfield to win the ball. He then plays a 1-2 with Justin but his shot is just over the bar.

Virtually all of the play is in the Stratton half now. Todd again makes a break through on the left and when challenged makes a nice pass back to an advancing Jordan. Jordan's first-time crisp shot is just saved by the Stratton keeper at full stretch.

Half Time 1 – 0

Straight from the restart Bassett pressure earns a corner. Another superb delivery by Jordan falls to Brad near the penalty spot who controls well and then rockets a great shot into the roof of the Stratton net.

Bassett 2 – 0

The Whites still want to advance up the field but are caught out by the Stratton offside trap. However, the resulting free kick goes straight to James who plays the perfect pass through the middle of the Stratton defence to Justin who beats a defender and finishes beautifully in the top right corner.

Bassett 3 – 0

Matthew and Jordan work well to make space and Jordan releases a nice cross to Nial. Nial makes a quick run and cuts in before passing to Brad who forces a fine save from the Stratton keeper.

Stratton come back at Bassett but Ollie makes a super interception around the half way line and makes a superbly weighted pass to Todd rushing through the middle. Todd takes the ball in his stride and is able to complete the move with a fine finish to make it 4-0.

Bassett 4 – 0

Stratton aren't defeated and attack straight away from the restart and get a shot away on the Bassett goal. Ryan makes a great save to his right to keep his sheet clean.

More Bassett pressure earns another corner which is once again finely delivered into the Stratton box by Jordan. Justin controls the ball in a bit of space in the area and slots home to complete his hat-trick.

Result Wootton Bassett Whites 5 Stratton Youth B 0

The conditions underfoot weren't great but Wootton Bassett Whites were able to show their class again, making great runs into space and nice passing around all areas of the pitch. For his non-stop effort and a fantastic debut performance Man Of The Match was awarded to Nial. Managers comments: Another fantastic effort where everyone played their part in a good team performance particularly as we had no subs due to illness and other commitments.
