Corsham Can't Crack Battling Bassett

Although not the prettiest of games, Wootton Bassett Town under 18's 0-0 draw with Corsham – their final home match of the season – was a gritty display of textbook defending from both teams.

The final score came as a shock for Corsham, who expected victory after their 5-2 triumph earlier in the season.

But Bassett had other ideas, frustrating their opponents with a disciplined display for the entire 90 minutes. The closest Corsham came to scoring was when a second half corner was allowed to hit the front post after Tom Marchment misheard a call from 'keeper Rich Hanley.

In fact, it should really have been Bassett that took home all three points.

With the help of a strong wind behind them, Bassett were able to pin their opponents back in the first half and Hanley's wind assisted kicks caused all kinds of problems.

Early on, one sailed over Corsham's last man and Phil Tearle raced onto it and was denied only by a fine save from 'keeper Anthony Brown, who was forced to tip wide a powerful effort.

George Drewitt then should have done better after receiving a half cleared set piece on the edge of the box. He could only drag his left-footed effort into the thankful hands of Brown though.

Then, just before the break, Tearle missed what can only be described as a sitter. Jonny Aitkenhead whipped in a free kick from the deep that appeared to be headed out of play. However, Marchment had other ideas, just managing to keep the ball in at the right post, and was able to centre to Tearle with his first touch.

With Brown in no man's land, Tearle had an open goal in front of him, but an awkward bounce meant he was unable to get his foot entirely over the ball and he struck over from six yards.

In the second half, both teams prodded and probed but strong defensive play limited the chances to mere half ones.

For Bassett, Josh Dimond's attempted lob never got over Brown, whilst Dunn struck wide from 18-yards whilst under heavy pressure.

Corsham – in search of a second place finish in the league – went with three up front in the dying stages to attempt to snag a winner and were able to apply some sustained pressure, but Bassett bravely held out and ensured Hanley had little to do.
