Baker Leads Bassett to a Half Dozen, and Win

Wootton Bassett Town Under 18's ended their month long winless run, edging Pewsey Vale in a 6-4 thriller thanks to a first half hat trick from James Baker.

Fielding an unchanged side, Bassett jumped to a perfect start as Baker dived in to head Josh Dimond's low cross from the right into the back of the net with the help of the cross bar with under 30 seconds gone.

However, the lead didn't last long and Bassett found themselves a goal down only five minutes later. Twice Josh Henshall beat Bassett's poor offside trap and he converted two easy chances.

Craig Kelly, in only his second start for the side then equaliser with the first of a three goal tear from the hosts. Two clinical finishes from Baker finished the run.

Lacklustre tackling allowed Pewsey to narrow the deficit to one going into the break though as their forward rounded two Bassett defenders and slammed home from 15 yards.

Both defences, after conceding a sack load of goals in the opening 45 minutes, tightened up considerably throughout the second period, with Baker and strike partner Phil Tearle frustrated by the Pewsey defence.

The scores were once again levelled midway through as a Bassett clearance from a set piece fell straight to a Pewsey forward, who fired low past Rich Hanley.

It looked as though both teams would be headed home with a point apiece, but two mistakes from Pewsey in the final ten minutes gifted Bassett a long awaited victory.

The go ahead goal came after the Pewsey 'keeper spilt a Tearle corner and substitute Tom Marchment reacted first, nipping in to head home the loose ball from all of a couple of yards.

Tearle then got his name on the score sheet to score the tenth goal of the match, pouncing on an under-hit backpass from John Turner and coolly lobbing the stranded 'keeper.
