Wootton Bassett Town were knocked out of their final FA competition as the Under 18 side went down 5-0 to an outstanding Tiverton Town side in North Devon, ending their FA Youth Cup run.
The home side's free flowing football continually opened up the Bassett defence and if it wasn't for an inspired performance between the sticks from Rich Hanley, the score would certainly have been more
However, Bassett came close to taking the lead ten minutes in. A cross from the left touchline was chested down by Tom Marchment to Phil Tearle on the edge of the box and, after taking a touch, Tearle aimed for the top right corner and narrowly missed.
Tiverton took the lead midway through the opening period with a sublime free kick from Sean Szabo that looped over the wall and nestled in the bottom left corner of the net.
Cam Nott then doubled the lead with a header from close range after Bassett failed to clear the lines from a Tiverton corner.
The host's lead could have been three going into the break as they were awarded a penalty after a Jonny Aitkenhead foul just inside the box. However, the resulting spot kick was dispatched high over the bar, leaving Bassett within touching distance at the half.
A double change at the half sparked a short spell of play in which Bassett threatened as Matt Povey and Marchment were both denied by 'keeper Danny Lewis.
Miscommunication at the back though proved to be the undoing of Bassett as confusion between Phil Forster and Hanley allowed Szabo to sneak in, round the 'keeper and tap into an open goal.
Glen Gould – a player who has appeared for the Tiverton first team in the Southern League Premier – added a fourth as he rode three challenges from the Bassett defence before finding the bottom corner.
Bassett had chances to grab a goal back as Dan Strange squandered a double chance from a corner before Tearle missed from the penalty spot as Lewis made a relatively comfortable save.
Szabo completed his hat trick in the final ten minutes as he fed off a pass from Richie Emmett and coolly slotted past Hanley.
