Despite playing most of the second half with ten men after the sending off of Phil Tearle, Wootton Bassett Town still came out on top in their tempestuous FA Youth Cup tie with Westbury United.
Bassett made the most perfect of starts as Jonny Aitkenhead opened the scoring within the first ten minutes with a howitzer of a goal. It looked as though the hosts had dealt with a Bassett attack but the clearance out fell to the Bassett 'skipper and he thrashed a right foot volley into the top right corner from all of 40 yards.
Ahead by a goal, Bassett played nervously and struggled to retain possession. This led to a flurry of Westbury attacks and they finally got a goal back after a quick counter attack, catching Bassett outnumbered and a shot from the left edge of the box flew past Rich Hanley.
Hanley then made a fine save from a glancing header. The 'keeper, seeing that he wouldn't win the aerial battle, held back to tip the ball around the post with a point blank save.
Just before the break, James Lewis ensured the visitors went in ahead, poking in at the far post after Tom Marchment had flicked on Jamie Hicks' corner from the left.
With an hour gone, Phil Forster netted the third. The left back weaved his way past two defenders and struck a low right-footed effort into the bottom right hand corner from eighteen yards.
Minutes later, Tearle was dismissed for apparently raising his hands and pushing over an opponent, who made a meal of his fall to the ground, after a nasty challenge on Hicks sparked things off.
The extra man did little to help the hosts though as Bassett remained tight and disciplined at the back. They rode their luck towards the end though as Aitkenhead had to clear off the line after Hanley failed to come up with the ball amongst a large group from a corner.
