Youths Leave It Late to Get the Job Dunn

Wootton Bassett Town under 18s left it late to ensure they got back to winning ways, with Callum Dunn's goal in the final minute of the game sealing a 3-1 win at home against bottom side Amesbury Town.

A team bereft of a number of regulars struggled to get going in the early stages of the game, and found themselves down by a goal as Rich Hanley was beat by a 20-yard effort after a free kick wasn't dealt with sufficiently.

It looked as though it was set to be another frustrating night for the home side as Dean Wason missed an open goal after doing brilliantly to round the 'keeper and James Baker headed a left wing cross over from six yards.

However, captain Jonny Aitkenhead supplied the equaliser midway through the half. Phil Tearle played a short set piece to his fellow first teamer, and from the left edge of the box Aitkenhead delivered a cross that sailed over everyone into the bottom right corner.

Baker played a large part in the goal as his dummy header froze the visiting 'keeper enough to ensure he couldn't get across to the ball.

Bassett started the second half brightly and were ahead before the hour with a goal coming from Matt Povey. Baker flicked on a ball on the edge of the box and the winger gambled smartly, just beating the 'keeper to the ball and lobbing him with his first touch.

The game was still alive though as Bassett failed to finish the game off, mostly due to some quality saves from the Amesbury 'keeper to deny Tearle, Dunn and Povey again.

Bassett got a bit lucky at the other end too, as the visitors had a 15 minute spell where they were camped inside their hosts half.

Rich Hanley was rarely troubled though, and Dunn was able to seal victory. James Dixon – impressive on his debut after a call up at the 11th hour – helped on a cross from the right with the deftest of flick ons and Dunn took the ball down, nutmegged his man and slotted coolly past the 'keeper.
