Lethargic Bassett Get West-buried

Wootton Bassett Town under 18s were resoundingly beaten, and leapfrogged in the Wiltshire Floodlit League table, by Westbury United as the team from south Wiltshire recorded an emphatic 5-1 victory.

Bassett had the game tied at half time but sloppy play led to them throwing things away in the second half, with the visitors notching four further goals without reply.

Westbury took the lead midway through the opening 45 minutes when Bassett failed to close down from a short corner and a shot from a tight angle looped into the top left corner.

Tom Marchment levelled things up moments before half time, tapping in from close range after James Baker had headed Phil Tearle's corner down to him.

The momentum Bassett carried was quashed almost instantly following the restart though. Twice Bassett were caught on the break down the left hand side, resulting in two easy finishes for the Westbury forwards.

Another sweeping break led to the fourth before 'keeper Rich Hanley spilled a free kick after colliding with an opposition forward. The resultant shot hit the bar but came back out and was easily headed into an open goal.

Pete Willis had a chance to give the score a more respectable look in the dying minutes but could only find the post as the under 18s defensive woes continued – they have now not conceded less than four in a game since the 20th of September, which is a span of six games.
