Wootton Bassett Town Ladies thumped Brize Norton Ladies 9-1 at Ballards Ash in their first outing in this season's Wiltshire County Women's & Girls League.

After an unbeaten pre-season, Bassett went into the game with some confidence but a combination of missed chances and some wholehearted defending from Brize Norton, a new team into the league this year, yielded a 2-1 half-time score.

Catherine Reid opening the scoring for Bassett, Brize Norton equalised from the penalty spot after a challenge by central defender Ali Knight, but Bassett restored their lead with a goal from Susan Shaw.

After a brief period of pressure from the visitors, Bassett extended their lead with a second goal from Reid.

That opened the floodgates and the Wiltshire side went on a spree in the latter stages with goals from Natasha Burson, Sarah Tyas (2), Cara Stacey and Reid, her hat-trick.
