Bassett take giant step towards avoiding relegation

From the Swindon Advertiser, Monday 19 April 2004

Wootton Bassett took a giant step towards avoiding relegation from the Premier Division with a 2-1 win at fellow strugglers Almondsbury.

The victory sees the two clubs swap positions either side of the drop zone, and with only one or two of the four relegation slots likely to be enforced, Pete Yeardley and his team appear to be safe.

The Bassett manager is not counting his chickens though.

"It was a very good victory for us," said Yeardley.

"Apart from 20 minutes at the end we totally outplayed them.

"I don't think it's over yet," he added.

"All the teams around got results and Almondsbury have still got to play Pewsey.

"I think we need one more win."

Steve Bunting put Bassett on course after just two minutes when he thumped home a Paul Patel corner from 18 yards out.

Yeardley's side earned some breathing space five minutes after the restart when Swatton turned in another Patel corner.

Craig Davidge tapped in to reduce arrears on 73 minutes, but Bassett held firm to collect three crucial points.
