Pewsey Put Even More Pressure on Bassett

Pewsey Recreation Ground, Saturday 6 March 2004

Pewsey Vale leapfrogged Bassett to go third from bottom as Barry Flippance scored the only goal in a tight win for Vale.

Steve Bunting should have done better for Bassett on two minutes when he hit miles over the bar following good work from John Magani.

Tom Ritchie hit well over from the edge of the area for Pewsey four minutes later. Barry Flippance should have given the home side the lead on 7 minutes as Andy Hallett failed to clear a bizarre corner but Flippance shot over from the loose ball.

On 10 minutes new signing Ian Gill saved at Flippance's feet after good build up play by Darren Hawkins.

Rob Hopkins shot wide from the right wing on eighteen minutes after Mark Vaughan had set him up.

Gill was again called into action in the 25th minute, saving well from a Tom Ritchie free kick.

A minute later Geoff Swatton curled one past the post at the other end before, in the 35th minute, Flippance scored the only goal of the game. Gill made two spectacular saves to deny Pewsey but after saving the second shot from point blank range the ball fell to Flippance and he scored from the rebound.

Martin Churchward headed wide from a corner seven minutes before the break. More woe for Bassett as Lee Morse and Mark Vaughan both found themselves booked before half time.

After the restart Andy Hallett broke his nose for the second time this year after being elbowed in the face by Ritchie – Ritchie only received a caution from referee Andy Davies.

John Magani and Lee Morse were both denied by Lee Wilson in a matter of minutes before Churchward headed over the bar at the other end on the hour.

Gill continued his impressive debut a minute later as he saved a Craig Wall shot. Magani could have levelled the score in the 67th minute after Stewart Bellinger played a cracking ball through to him but Magani's first touch let him down. Bassett brought Matt Bennett on for Steve Bunting to add another attacking option.

Rob Hopkins denied Flippance four minutes later preventing the Pewsey striker from doubling his tally for the game after initially being caught out.

Swatton hit wide for Bassett in the 73rd minute before both he and Magani had chances from a Bellinger ball but both failed to convert as Wilson denied them again.

Ten minutes from time Bellinger shot on the turn but Wilson made an easy save. Bassett brought Ben Gascoyne on for Hopkins to put another man up front but Bassett could still not find a way to goal despite Pewsey visibly tiring on the closing stages.

In the 85th minute Mark Vaughan was sent off for a debatable second yellow card further increasing the number of first team regulars to be out injured or suspended.

Bassett travel to North Leigh in the week and then to Carterton both games against high flying teams and both are tough, important games.
