Bassett beaten by the league leaders

On Saturday we travelled to league leaders Brackley Town with high expectations of inflicting their first defeat of the season and building on our 5-0 opening game win over Bicester. We started very well with Rob Day and Simon Edwards linking up well up front and looking very dangerous and the defensive trio of Ben Jarrett, Paul Carson and Steve Howse dealing with everything that came our way. After twenty five minutes we had to replace Woody due to his dodgy hamstring with the returning Jon Davis but we re-grouped and continued to dominate the game without seriously testing the goalkeeper and went into the break confident of winning the game in the second half.

The second half was very frustrating as we had chance after chance but through both bad luck and poor finishing we were unable to get the breakthrough and then conceded a very sloppy goal after a poor kick by Jason Hillier. To our credit we carried on trying to create chances with some lovely build up play and Ben Gascoyne nearly scored with his first touch after coming on. Rob Day then nearly scored with a driving run past four defenders but fired wide when an early entrance into the goal of the season was in the reckoning. Steve Yeardley then headed against the post following a corner and then Brackley broke away and scored the second goal with just five minutes remaining and maintain their unbeaten start to the season. We must take the positives into our next game and improve on both our quality of finishing and set plays and we will be more than a match for any side we play this season. On a disappointing note it looks like being a very stop-start season again for us as we have no game this Saturday and as a club we should now be looking to see if we should enter into a league which has more games in keeping with both our first and third teams to be fair to our players for next season. Our next game will be on Saturday 5th October when we entertain North Leigh.

Bassett Line-up v Brackley: Jason Hillier, Ben Jarrett, Paul Carson, Steve Howse, Bryan Wood, Jon-Paul Hibbert, Pete Cahill, Harry Sandu, Danny Clayton, Rob Day, Simon Edwards. Subs: Steve Yeardley, Ben Gascoyne, Jon Davis.
