Another good performance from Bassett

With a couple of regular players missing, it was a chance to make some changes and try some different positions. An excellent start from the team, and some solid work from all players. Although we had at least six chances to score, It was really difficult to get past the Highworth defence. Highworth packed the penalty area and made it really difficult to pass or have any space/time on the ball. After numerous goal mouth scrambles, a rebounded shot fell to the feet of Sam Munton who tucked it away to give Bassett a well-deserved lead. Highworth struggled to get the ball into our half and some excellent defending from Brett Fairclough and James French ensured Reece Postill in goal never touched the ball once in the first half. We had three quality corners from Oliver Stevens, and two excellent runs down the wing and super crosses in the box, only if we had someone to head the ball!!

At the break we made a couple of changes, and we put Sean Miles on. Sean had an excellent game and made some strong challenges and passed the ball well, he definitely deserved his selection. Playing uphill in the second half I expected to see Highworth pushing players forward, but yet again they never penetrated in numbers, and any surges forward were dealt with by Brett and James. Again it was only a matter of time before our constant pressure would pay off and Dominic Gordon was in the right place, at the right time to slot in our second goal. Our third goal was quality and was finished off by James Stansall who played his best game to date. He was strong with his challenges and he distributed the ball well. His goal was well deserved and was thumped into the net giving the keeper no chance. Our fourth goal was Dominic's second goal of the game, just after coming back onto the field after previously being substituted, Dominic slotted the ball past the goalkeeper, after another string of five passes. A late goal from James Stansall was disallowed for a previous tackle by James but was clinically finished. To be fair, he did foul the defender, his strength on the ball and physical presence did in this case, work against him. On the day we could have easily scored more and was by far the stronger team. Everyone who played did very well and although difficult to pick a MOM, I would say James Stansall did very well in midfield, Oliver Stevens had a great game on the left-wing Brett Fairclough was a rock in defence and Dominic Gordon deserved his two goals. Also, special mentions for Alec Daley, Sean Miles, and James French.
