Champions crash on their own ground

Outstanding performance in the Wiltshire League on Saturday was that of Wootton Bassett Town who, with former Swindon and Garrard player Maurice Leslie on duty, beat old rivals, Swindon Victoria, the reigning champions, 6-0 on the Victoria ground.

Vics could not call upon goalkeeper Martin and Pickering and full back Ponting became an emergency 'keeper. This was a bad start to the season but it was not until the second half that they lost their grip on the game.

Thompson scored the first goal after eight minutes but the other five came after the interval from Smith (3), Skull and Lane.

Wootton Bassett have made a point of opening the season in a blaze of glory only to falter in the latter stages. Maybe this will be their lucky year.
