V.W.H. Cup for Wootton Bassett

Wootton Bassett won the V.W.H. Cup by defeating Swindon Victoria 1-0 in the final at the County Ground on Thursday. Scull scored the goal in the 69th minute. It was a game in which both sides missed chances. Both teams were strong at centre-half, Arnold for the Vics and Cole for Wootton Bassett giving the respective centre-forwards little scope, but Wootton Bassett just deserved their victory on the score of having the better forward combination. Their star was inside left Rowlands, an ex-Victoria player, and he had good assistance from D. Simpkins. Neither goalkeeper was called upon to save many direct shots but each, in turn, had to deal with some awkward centres. Archer had no chance with Scull's scoring shot which was a cross-drive from the corner of the penalty area. He was also beaten on one other occasion just previously when a hard drive from Bunce crashed against his crossbar. Scull also netted again but from a palpably offside position. Although they lost left half Jefferies for ten minutes through an injury Victoria strove hard for an equalising goal in the last period of the game but were weak at centre forward. Sumpter missed a glorious chance to score when put through by Arnold and it was left to Kent, on the left wing, to provide most of their forward thrust. Mee also had an easy chance but headed outside. During this period the Wootton Bassett backs King and Randall did much useful work. Mr Harold Fleming presented the trophy.
