The Under 13s faced a well organised AFC Corsham Pumas side on Saturday, and it was clear from the start that it was going to be a tight contest. Eventually though Bassett would prevail 2-1 as they made it four wins from four.
Both teams battled for the opening goal, but the score stayed level. It looked like it might stay that way, though the Blues always looked more likely to break the deadlock.
That breakthrough eventually came through with Kacy Gower, making a superb tackle in the heart of midfield before picking out Hollie Peachey with a lovely pass. Hollie then played a perfectly weighted ball into the path of Chloe Guppy, who calmly slotted the ball home to give Bassett a 1-0 lead going into half time.
The second half was much the same, with Bassett relentlessly pushing for a second goal. The team also did some brilliant defensive blocks to stop Corsham getting a goal back.
Ruby Mallows delivered a brilliant forward ball, sending Hollie charging forward. She passed the ball across the face of goal and it found Christina Croft, who made no mistake in finishing.
A slight late lapse in concentration resulted in Corsham nicking a goal back, making it 2-1 with 15 minutes to play.
It was a nervy finish, but Bassett held out until the final whistle, including a crucial outstanding save from goalkeeper Ella Oates.
The final score was 2-1 to Bassett - a well-deserved win and a fantastic team performance.
Player of the match went to Hollie, who didn't seem to run out energy, her driving runs causing the Corsham defence problems all game.
Well done girls - onto a meeting with a strong Blunsdon side next week, who currently top the table. First against second - it should be a thriller.
