Bassett breeze through in Wiltshire Women’s Cup

Royal Wootton Bassett Town recorded a big win against Blunsdon to progress to the second round of the Wiltshire County Women's Cup in, as was expected, comfortable fashion.

Facing opponents from the Wiltshire League Development Division, Bassett were heavy favourites and progressed with ease to the next round where they will visit Blunsdon's league rivals Staverton Rangers.

To their credit, Blunsdon, who featured former Bassett players including striker Laura Gammon - now playing in goal, never gave up and kept working hard from the first whistle to the last.

But the two division gap between the sides was evident and meant that this was a very one-sided contest.

Bassett registered ten goals in the opening half.

The first three fell to Caitlin Brooks before Lucy Goodright got in on the act with a pair.

Brooks then completed her double hat trick, with Goodright making it 9-0 and an unfortunate own goal taking the hosts into double figures.

Blunsdon offered up some solid resistance early in the second half before Hannah Gulliver eventually extended Bassett's lead further.

A flurry of goals followed. Goodright added another two before Cara Sommerville got in on the action. Maddy Elliott then struck three in a row before Goodright joined Brooks on six goals for the afternoon.

Bassett will be pleased too to have kept a clean sheet. Such games often can lead to a lapse or two in concentration at the back. But Bassett largely avoided that, allowing 'keeper Thea Hopkins - who got the chance to play ahead of Millie Powell - to keep a clean sheet.
