Waldon double helps Bassett waltz past Wantage

Royal Wootton Bassett Town made it two wins from two to start their Hellenic League Premier Division campaign after an emphatic 4-0 victory away against Wantage Town.

New signing Connor Waldon led the way, scoring twice as Sam Collier's side eased their way to another three points.

Saturday's win against Slimbridge was a nailbiter, with Bassett forced to come from behind.

However, Waldon opened his account midway through the opening period to ensure that this time Bassett would be playing from in front - a position from which they never looked back.

Good work down the left between Louis Spalding and Tommy Ouldridge opened up space for the latter to deliver a ball into the box, which Waldon controlled before sitting his marker down and firing into the roof of the net.

Bailey Gallagher then doubled Bassett's advantage as half time neared. Ouldridge was again involved, delivering a sublime cross for Gallagher who volleyed home.

Waldon netted his second of the night to make it 3-0 around the hour mark when he was on hand to slot into the net after Mitchell Larman could only parry from a long range Gallagher drive.

The scoring was finally completed fifteen minutes from time when substitute Tom Moore got in on the act, bundling in a rebound after Adam Corcoran had initially seen his header saved by Larman.

It could certainly have been a greater margin of victory for Bassett but for some otherwise sloppy finishing. However, Collier will have few complaints given the size of the win - with the clean sheet an added bonus.

Bassett now have a weekend off to rest their legs before next Tuesday's home test against Mangotsfield United.
