Second Half Showing Ensures Unbeaten Record Continues

A fine showing late in the second half secured Royal Wootton Bassett Town Under 18s a 3-1 win at home against Calne Town.

A switch to the 3G at the Gerard Buxton Ground allowed the game to go ahead. The two sides had drawn 1-1 back in September at Bremhill View and the home side knew their unbeaten start to the season was set to be tested by a Calne side who had won five of their opening eight fixtures.

It was close throughout the first half, but it was the visitors who got themselves in front from a corner two minutes from half time. Fraser Blake fired in a delivery to the far post and the kick completely deceived Jack Rae in the Bassett goal and ended up in the back of the net.

It remained 1-0 to Calne until deep into the second half.

Last week Bassett had scored three times in the last 20 minutes to secure the points at Kingsdown and it was around the 70th minute mark that they got themselves back into this game from the penalty spot after a body check on the edge of the six-yard box. Harry Bunce fired the spot kick low and into the corner of the net for 1-1.

Six minutes later the home side were in front for the first time, an excellent Charlie Stammers cross from the right to the far post was headed in by leading scorer Jacob Rendell-Haines for his ninth of the season.

The home side made sure of all three points right at the end of the game, substitute Flynn Walters smashing a shot with his left foot from the edge of the 18-yard box that gave the Calne 'keeper no chance, going in just under the crossbar for 3-1.

For the second week running the league leaders had hit three goals in the final 20 minutes to seal all three points.
