Second half stunners condemns Bassett to narrow defeat

The Gore, 24 October 2020

A first Hellenic League Premier Division win of the season still remains elusive for Royal Wootton Bassett Town after Sam Collier's side suffered an agonising 1-0 defeat away against Burnham.

In a game that pitted two sides who had enjoyed runs to the Emirates FA Cup Second Qualifying round but who had both endured slow starts in their league campaigns, there was very little that separated the two teams. However, a thunderbolt of a strike from Burnham's Rashid Hamid with twenty minutes remaining ultimately determined the destination of the points.

Both sides were able to fashion chances throughout the game, and Bassett narrowly missed taking the lead in the opening period having had a handful of opportunities.

The decisive moment then arrived on 69 minutes as Hamid struck a fierce shot from just outside the area that flew beyond Harrison Ellis, crashed off the underside of the bar and dropped an inch beyond the goalline.

It was a goal worthy of winning any game. But for Bassett it dealt another blow as their search to notch a league triumph goes on.
