Rocks Toppled

Hardwicke Playing Field, 22nd April 2009

An inspired performance from Wootton Bassett Town ensured a tough 2-0 away win at 8th placed Tytherington Rocks, as Dave Turner's side inched closer to securing a fourth place finish.

Bassett's goals came courtesy of Tytherington defender Phil Ward and Steve Yeardley, who grabbed a goal for the third consecutive game.

It was an impressive result considering Bassett only managed to field a bare eleven, which was reduced to ten for a portion of the game after an injury to the already bruised up Scott Ward.

Impressively, both Alan Blake and Paul Hunt, whose combined age reaches a number unheard of by most residents of Wootton Bassett, battled through the 90 minutes to help the side on their way.

Highlighting the reason why Bassett will fail to finish in a promotion place though is the fact that the Gloucestershire side became only the fourth team to fail to earn at least a point off Bassett this season, after they lost by the same score at Rylands Way in October. The other three sides who Turner's team have done the double over all reside in the bottom three.

Had they been able to kill more of the mid-table teams off – as they did to Tytherington – throughout the year perhaps the final game of the year at Lydney Town would have a little more riding on the outcome.
