'A Team' win the Wootton Bassett derby

The new season got underway with an excellent match between the two Bassett teams. The first twenty minutes saw both teams trying to dominate the midfield, with the B team coming out on top. Their efforts were rewarded after thirty minutes when they opened the scoring with a very well crafted goal. The A team were quick to respond and equalised after three minutes with Wayne Matthews calmly bringing the ball under control in the oppositions six yard box to score. The remainder of the first half saw both teams creating chances and it was only a very fine save by the B teams keeper, Jason Hudson, that ensured that the teams went in level at half time .

It was a credit to the home team that Bassett A were forced to make a tatical change at half time, bringing on Rich Deacon to the left wing and moving Tom James to the centre forward position. This change quickly worked with Tom scoring twice within 15 minutes of the restart. Bassett B were not going to lay down and scored with an excellent goal in the 65th minute to put the A team under considerable pressure for the remainder of the game. The game could have gone either way with both teams creating scoring opportunities but it was Tom James who sealed the match in the last few minutes to start the season with a hatrick.

Both teams played some very good football, which was appreciated by the large crowd who turned out to support the club.
