Bassett crowned champions

Where do I start with this story? We all arrived on Friday afternoon and the weather was, to be honest, shocking; howling wind and rain we all thought great (not). Surely not all weekend for the boys? Alas, the rain went Friday evening and out came the hot sun with the cool wind all weekend and by Monday we all went home with fairly good sun tans, some more than others. The football started on Saturday with 2 games for us in the afternoon and by the close of play we had won both games comfortably and conceded nothing. The next day came and went and we played 3 games that day, with all 3 games hard and again we came through with 3 wins and no goals against. Monday came and this time it was a different story. We had to win 2 of our last three games to win the title with the first game kicking off against Interwood, who had 2 academy players in from Arsenal and Charlton. Their was a lot of running by our team and great marking as well; the first half finished 1-0 and the opposing team kept pressing but we broke and had a free kick outside the area. Up stepped Jack Brain and what a free kick that was; top corner in the back of the net and the keeper did not even move (move aside Mr Beckham). We won the game 2-0 and progressed on to the next game, which we had to win to clinch the trophy. That game we won 2-0 as well and we were crowned champions. Our third game was against a team chasing runners up and, with the boys so tired by this stage, we lost 4-0 with our only defeat of the weekend.

The parents were ecstatic with the boys' performance and at times we all nearly had heart attacks, as a result of how the games were played, but the boys came through it. As I said on the sidelines, "God it was hard watching them," we all went through a rollercoaster of a weekend with emotions for them. The boys were fantastic!!!! They played for each other, fought for each other and myself or Andy could not have asked for a better bunch of boys and parents this weekend, and some of the goals they scored were breathtaking.

A big big thank you to all the parents and their children who came and watched this tournament and I know they did not go home disappointed; maybe tired and drained emotions. Most importantly though, thank you to all of the under 8's; the team ran and ran for each other until they could not run any more. What a credit to the team and to themselves and the club of Wootton Bassett Town.

Roll of Honour

Keeper: James Painter.

Defence: Harry (Chopper) Hazzard, Joe (Cool) Whiteley

Midfield: Tyler Amos, Jack Brain, Aaron Oakley

Forward: Ryan Amos, Jake Matthews

Once again A big thank you to all the people who came down to support the children and a big thank you to all the players above who were outstanding in this tournament. There was too much individual and team skill to mention all of it in this report, so all I can say is:

"CONGRATULATIONS TO THE UNDER 8'S!"

you deserve the title.
