Tense Tussle at Wootton Bassett

The Football Pink, Saturday 10th October 1959

Wootton Bassett, home to Pinehurst Y.C. in the FA Amateur Cup, took the lead after six minutes when from a corner the clearance was to Nash, whose shot was only palmed down, and G. Simpkins had only to place the ball into the net with Packer on the ground.

For the next few minutes Pinehurst piled on the pressure, and Johnes in the Wootton Bassett goal was frequently in action.

Wootton Bassett attacked on few occasions, but were always dangerous.

Pinehurst's effort were rewarded in the 46th minute when Johnes failed to hold a terrific shot from Clifford and Prothero was there to hit the ball in to level the scores.

The Evening Advertiser, Monday 12th October 1959

Wootton Bassett and Pinehurst Y.C. players are certainly getting to know each other. When they contested an FA Amateur Cup tie on the Town ground on Saturday it was the fourth time this season that they had met and as a draw resulted a fifth clash will be necessary next weekend.

Having beaten the Youth Centre twice in the Wiltshire Premier League Cup, and drawn with them in the League, Wootton Bassett, with ground advantage, started favourites, but the Swindon side held them to a 1-1 draw.

Simpkins scored for Wootton Bassett in six minutes and Prothero equalised before half time.

The Football Pink, Saturday 17th October 1959 (by Senior)

The Amateur Cup game between Wootton Bassett and Pinehurst Y.C. was the fourth meeting of the clubs this season. They drew and so played their fifth to-day!

Any other result than a draw would have been an injustice to the clubs for whereas Pinehurst had perhaps a little the better of the midfield exchanges, Wootton Bassett were more direct in their final assaults.

Geoffrey Simpkins opened the scoring for Wootton Bassett and Prothero replied.
