Under 18s suffer first league defeat

Royal Wootton Bassett Town Under 18s' unbeaten start to their Wiltshire League Floodlit Division campaign came to an end as they suffered a 2-0 loss in their top of the table clash against Melksham Town.

On a disappointing evening for Bassett, Nick Warren's side never got going. And visitors Melksham were able to take advantage, scoring twice from set pieces in the second half to take all three points.

The visitors went ahead five minutes after the restart as Tom Dowell was on hand at the near post to add a deft flick to Cameron Pearce's low free kick that had been swung into the box from the left side.

Pearce then doubled Melksham's advantage as the 70th minute approached, producing a stunning free kick from 20 yards out that was placed perfectly into the top right corner.

The defeat sees Bassett fall five points behind leaders Melksham, who they had beaten 2-1 when the teams first met back in September. With two games in hand still to play, Bassett can still leapfrog their opponents. However, there is now no room for error.
