Under 18s maintain unbeaten start

Two first half goals, both from corners, helped Royal Wootton Bassett Town Under 18 to a 2-1 Wiltshire League Floodlit Division victory against Calne Town.

The win, Bassett's fourth of the season, means they remain unbeaten and in a position to overtake leaders Devizes Town should Nick Warren's charges win the game in hand that they possess.

Bassett are due to host Devizes later this month in what is set to be an exciting, pivotal top of the table clash.

Against Calne it took Bassett quarter of an hour to take the lead as a hanging corner fell perfectly for Kevin Prouse, who guided a controlled sidefoot volley into the net from close range.

A second set piece goal followed eight minutes before the interval. This time the corner was played short to Jowan Partridge and, after taking one touch, he thundered an unstoppable shot from the right side of the area that rattled in off the crossbar.

Bassett were largely the superior side throughout the game, but were unable to extend the advantage.

And with just under twenty minutes to go, Calne got themselves back into the game. Bassett were guilty of some casual defending deep inside their own half and, after the visitors seized possession, the ball was eventually tapped in after an initial shot came back out off the post.

That could have made for a nervous end to the game, but Bassett saw out the match to extend their unbeaten start to the season to five games.
