Walton Winner Lifts Reserves

24 Mar 2012 - Shrivenham (H)

Wootton Bassett Town Reserves secured a vital win in their fight to secure third spot in Hellenic League Division Two West, coming from behind to beat local rivals Shrivenham 2-1.

Shrivenham had started the afternoon occupying third spot, three points ahead of Simon Paish's side having played a game more. And early on it looked as though the visitors to Rylands Way were likely to extend their advantage as they took the lead inside two minutes.

They maintained their advantage until ten minutes after the restart when Jack Windel grabbed his sixth goal of the season to pull Bassett level.

In a closely fought match, it was anyone's guess what the outcome come full time was going to be. But on 77 minutes youngster Ieuan Walton provided an answer. Prolific over the past two seasons in the North Wilts League for the under 18 A side, Walton has more than deserved his promotion to senior football. And he repaid the faith entrusted in him with his first goal at this level.

Few goals may be as important for the Reserves who are now level on points with Shrivenham, albeit with an inferior goal difference. However, Bassett's game in hand means they can now leapfrog their rivals.

Victory lifted Bassett one place to fifth. More importantly though they now sit just two points behind Highworth Town, who inherited third spot, with a game in hand. And with four of their five remaining fixtures against teams in the bottom half, there is every chance of a deserved fantastic finish.
