Wootton Bassett Town Reserves began 2012 in style as a Jack Windel brace lifted Simon Paish's side to a 4-2 victory against Wantage Town.

A defeat would have seen Wantage climb above Bassett in the Hellenic League Division Two West standings. And they appeared set for a fine afternoon when they took the lead inside the opening two minutes.

However, Bassett got themselves back into the game five minutes before the break when captain George Drewitt converted from the penalty spot.

That goal served to shift the momentum in the game. Shortly after the restart Jack Windel put the home side ahead, and the youngster extended the advantage with his second on the hour.

In an entertaining game, Wantage were able to grab a lifeline when they reduced the deficit in the 67th minute. But the Bassett defence held firm, and the veteran Shaun Terry slotted home with just seconds remaining to make sure of the points.

The reserves have now won three of their last four, and continue to fly high in fourth place.
