Sunday 19th April 2009 - Croft Juniors 'B' (A)

With an early kick-off and a biting wind, we might have expected a slow start, but the game got off to a lively opening with chances at both ends. Scott and Harry were soon in the action and Isaac had to make an early save in goal. It was Bassett who looked more dangerous , however, and it was no surprise when a strong shot from Harry bounced off a defender to Coxy who slammed the ball home to open the scoring: 1 – 0

Bassett then began to play some lovely football which was to last throughout the match. Jordan looking full of tricks and George making some lovely passes and taking another series of delightfully accurate corners. An equalizer was snatched against the run of play, however, with a Croft player being felled in the box and a powerful spot kick giving Isaac no chance: 1 – 1

This didn't faze our lads at all and the Bassett machine soon spluttered back into life. Declan Coffey was fighting for everything and playing his part in some delightful midfield work with his teammates. Scott was equal to all attacks and Harry took on his captain's role with great assurance. Croft looked second best all over the pitch and a second goal just had to come. It was Dec Coffey who scored it after a strong run into the box. He looked to have lost the ball but recovered beautifully to slot in a great shot at the far post: 2 – 1

All the boys were now working well as a team. Matt played his part in typical fashion, tackling and passing to great effect and James, now on up front, twisted and turned to keep the defenders guessing. It was Coxy who popped up yet again to score his second of the game, pouncing on some defensive indecision to fire home from close range: 3 – 1

Half time: 3 – 1

The second half saw no further goals but a complete team performance with everyone playing their part. There were chances for Jordan and Coxy and George hit the post once and fired over some time later. Scott and Harry stuck to their task at the back and Isaac made a couple of vital saves but the result was never in doubt. A thoroughly deserved victory from an ever-improving team.

Man of the match: Declan Cox – a brace of fine goals and another all-action performance.
