Sunday 22nd February 2009 - Purton 'B' (A)

With the prospect of facing a strong Purton team without the inspirational Beckham, Bassett knew they needed to be at their best if they were to get anything out of this game.

They were given the perfect start as Jordan launched a splendid long range shot which gave the Purton keeper no chance: 1 – 0

Despite some dangerous looking attacks from the opposition Bassett proceeded to have the better of the opening exchanges. Jordan fought for everything and made some fantastic runs forward. Dec Coffey was equally busy, finding space to turn and pass to really open up the opposition. In defence, Harry and Scott were tremendous, chasing down the ball and closing on the Purton forwards as soon as they burst forward. In goal, Isaac looked solid, making some excellent saves and clearances. George looked for openings up the left and, as usual, he put in a series of pin-point corners just begging to be turned in but the half ended with no further goals.

Half-time: 1 – 0

With Matt now taking his place in goal, the half began with early pressure from Purton, their excellent captain showing some lovely touches up front. An excellent save from Matt denied him, but soon after a desperate clearance from Coxy who was tracking back very strongly found its way into our net for a deserved equalizer: 1 – 1

Bassett were not down-hearted, however, and always looked dangerous on the break. A ball looped forward by Jordan was pounced on by Coxy and he calmly slotted home our second, brushing defenders off as if they were annoying flies: 2 – 1

A really entertaining match then developed with Bassett putting together some delightful passing moves, Dec, Jorda ,Coxy and George combining beautifully. Matt continued to show great skill between the sticks tipping one certain goal up onto the bar. James fought hard for possession and put in some lovely passes. Bailey, now on for his second match of the season tackled strongly. The excellent Purton attack was not to be denied, however, and a rare mistake in our defence was pounced on for the equalizer: 2 – 2

The game, now on a knife-edge, both teams went for the victory and our hearts were in our mouths as Purton's player of the match found another way through our excellent defenders to turn in their third goal of the morning: 2 – 3

Such a cruel set-back would have seen heads drop earlier in the season, but Bassett are now made of stronger stuff and Dec Coffey, in particular, refused to lie down and die. With minutes left on the clock, he chased a hopeless cause down the right, battled past two defenders and forced the ball in from close range for a deserved equalizer: 3 – 3

Our first draw of the season against a good side with many outstanding performances sees our unbeaten run continue.

Man of the match: Jordan Wright – his superb opening goal was followed by a battling and skilful performance which caused many problems for the opposition throughout the match.
