Sunday 22nd March 2009 - Wroughton Juniors 'B' (H)

With a full compliment of 11 players turning up for this Mothers Day fixture, the coach's main problem looked to be how to give every one of his keen squad a game!

The first quarter of the match looked pretty even for much of the time with Wroughton lively going forward and Bassett seemed to take a while to get into their stride. Isaac had to be alert several times between the sticks but he was solid from start to finish.

Dec Cox had a sniff of a chance when a lovely move ended with a goal-keeper's fumble that he couldn't quite turn in. Dec Coffey moved the ball wide with great effect and Jordan Wright began to work some magic through the middle. George made some lovely dribbles up the right and the chances began to appear. First another shot from Coxy then one from Jordan followed by a run and shot from George – but it was rare penalty that opened our account when a Wroughton defender handled in the box. Jordan stepped up to slam it home: 1 – 0

This seemed to fire up the Bassett pads and others showed some great moments. Matt had a lovely header cleared and Harry made the first of a series of strong tackles and clearances. Ben chased tirelessly and put in some lovely passes forward and Scott defended very solidly, building on some excellent work in previous matches.

Half Time 1 – 0

The half-time oranges seemed to inspire the Bassett lads and they stepped up a gear in the second period. Jordan teased and tested the Wroughton defence and Coxy took a series of corners which cause panic for the opposition. Bailey, now on up front, played a vital part in our second goal, passing to an unmarked Coxy whose powerful shot flew high into the net: 2 – 0

James took over soon after and his contribution was equally telling, he kept possession really well and was always looking for the pass that would open up a chance. It was, however, a moment of real skill from Jordan that saw our third goal notched up as he turned beautifully at the edge of the box and squeezed a pin point shot past the floundering keeper: 3 – 0

Wroughton now seemed resigned to their fate, although Scott and Harry still needed to make some further tackles to preserve the clean sheet.

A fourth goal was always looking likely and it came as a result of another lovely passing move which ended with a delightful pass from James to George who calmly slotted home from the edge of the area: 4 – 0

This was yet another entertaining match in which the Bassett lads grew in confidence as the game wore on and their well-drilled routines began to bear fruit.

Man of the match: Jordan Wright – a tremendous all-action performance topped with a calmly taken penalty and a top quality goal taken on the turn which took the match beyond our opponents.
