Sunday 30th November 2008 - Wroughton Juniors 'B' (A)

What a performance! What a result! The team finally found a scoreline to match their efforts and, despite the sleet and the frozen feet, we all left Wroughton with a smile on our faces.

From the kick-off, Bassett played with enthusiasm and energy, creating some delightful passing moves and the game was only two minutes old when a beautiful move ended with Jordan slipping the ball to Declan Coffey who steered the ball past the keeper.: 1 – 0

Wroughton then had a spell of pressure but Isaac and Beckham were superb in defence and any sniff of a chance was quickly eliminated. The threat of another goal from Bassett continued and after a corner, the Wroughton goalie had to be at his best to smother a chance from Declan Cox. Jordan and Ben combined well in the middle of the park to open up attack after attack. Then a free-kick was awarded to Wroughton just outside the box and the supporters feared yet another cruel twist of fate. It was not to be this time as our defence, ably supported by the midfield, cleared the ball with ease. Harry was rarely called on in goal, but caught a couple of shots with assurance.

Then a glorious run out from the back from Declan Coffey saw him fly forward past two defenders and draw the goalie into no-man's-land. The ball broke past the Wroughton keeper and Matt was there to bury the ball from two yards: 2 – 0

A few moments later, Declan Coffey once again broke up field and ghosted past the Wroughton defence to find some space from which he slammed home his second of the morning: 3 – 0

The opposition began to see that they were up against a well drilled team who meant business. George was now on and began to make headway down the left, always looking for the pass and a lovely move ended with a yet another strong shot from Declan Coffey which found its way between the goalie's legs to drop over the line. His second hat-trick of the season and a just reward for an outstanding first half performance: 4 – 0

Half time : 4 – 0

The result now beyond question, the Bassett lads really began to show what they can do with all of them passing and moving beautifully. Jordan turned expertly on several occasions and Declan Cox made searching runs through the middle. Matt battled and harried the defence and Ben ran with his usual energy.

A special goal was needed to round off this performance and we got it courtesy of George who dribbled down the left, beat a couple of defenders and fired into the net from a tight angle: 5 – 0

Wroughton fought on bravely, looking to get a consolation goal but our defence stood firm with Beckham making crucial interceptions and Isaac pulling off a couple of superb saves. A late free- kick for Bassett saw Beckham letting one fly that just crept over the cross-bar and the match soon ended with a victorious and muddy Bassett being cheered from the pitch. A fantastic team effort with several outstanding individual performances.

Final score: 5 – 0

Man of the match: Beckham Hulbert – a superb defensive display which provided the solid platform needed for this victory. To win Man of the Match when someone else scores a hat-trick is a rarity but Beckham thoroughly deserves it.
