Sunday 26th April 2009 - Wickham Wanderers (H)

Two days after travelling to Wickham, Bassett A Team played host to Wickham for their penultimate league game of the season.

Bassett started brightly and after 2 minutes Beckham passed to Euan who took the ball across the Wickham box and shot from the angle to force a good save from the Wickham keeper. A minute later Wickham were on the attack and Conor made a great save as the Wickham forward shot from 5 yards.

On the very next attack, Tyler advanced down the right and crossed the ball to be met by Beckham on the back post to make it 1-0 Bassett with his first goal for the "A" Team.

Wickham were straight back at Bassett and a goal bound free kick was headed away from danger by Lewis. Over the next 5 minutes, Bassett found it tough to get the ball beyond the half way line, yet Wickham never got a clear chance on goal. That was until a quick break meant the Wickham forward was 1-on-1 but Conor made a brave save at his feet.

A couple of minutes later, Jordan and Lewis broke up a Wickham attack, passed the ball to Callum who fed Euan on the right. Euan's cross was met by Tyler whose shot went just wide of the Wickham goal.

Wickham found themselves level on 15 minutes when a Bassett attack was stopped by a strong tackle and some quick passing found the Wickham forward 1-on-1 again on the Bassett goal. This time he slotted the ball passed Conor to make it 1-1.

A minute later Wickham almost made it 1-2, but a superb covering tackle by Lewis pushed the ball out for a corner. From the corner the Wickham attacker got a shot on target which was superbly saved by Conor.

As half time approached Callum broke down the right and crossed. Tyler met the cross but unfortunately his shot went straight at the keeper, the rebound fell at Euan's feet who shot instantly but somehow the Wickham keeper made an incredible save to keep it at 1-1. Tyler put the resulting corner right between the posts and following an almighty scramble Lewis swivelled and shot to make it 2-1 Bassett.

The luxury of a Bassett half time lead was almost ruined by Wickham when a long ball from the back sailed over the heads of the Bassett defenders but Conor was alert to make a good save at the feet of the Wickham attacker.

Half Time: 2-1

The first 10 minutes of the second half was full of strong defensive tackling by Alanah and Jordan, and great work rate from the Bassett midfield and attack. The second half deadlock was almost broken when Lewis broke up a Wickham attack, passed to Euan, who passed out right to Beckham. Beckham made every effort to get to the ball but unfortunately his shot went wide of the Wickham goal.

On 15 minutes Wickham attacked again. A long range shot was goal bound until some quick feet by Conor covered the ground and he made a comfortable save. A minute later, Tyler took another corner which was met by the head of Euan, only for the ball to loop onto the Wickham bar and away for a goal kick.

Bassett now had control of the game. Alanah and Jordan were strong in defence, Beckham and Lewis supported Callum and Euan in midfield and Tyler ran tirelessly (or is that Tylerlessly) up front. The last chance of the game fell to Tyler who met a Callum cross, his shot being well saved by the Wickham goal keeper.

Full-time: 2-1

Match Analysis: A superb display and result for Bassett. The team showed their true character and played more than enough football to warrant this win.

Player of the Match: Another great team display. Euan taking today's MOTM award for a sterling effort in midfield.
