Sunday 19th April 2009 - Lydiard Youth 'A' (H)

Following the Easter break the "A" Team entertained Lydiard Youth at Ballards Ash. Needing a confidence booster after a loss and draw, the team needed to pull together and show their spirit.

From the kick off, Lydaird cut straight through Bassett and only a fine save by Conor followed by him diving at the opponents feet to stop Lydiard going one-nil up. Bassett went back at Lydiard and a flowing move between Jordan and Euan, Tyler put the shot narrowly wide.

Bassett didn't settle in these early moments and found themselves down as Lydiard went through the Bassett midfield and defence to score on 4 minutes.

It was only Conor in goal that kept Bassett in this match as he produced two excellent saves. Unfortunately on 10 minutes his heroics couldn't continue as Lydiard were left one-on-one again, this time, the forward making no mistake to make it nil-two Lydiard.

Basset's first clear chance came on 17 minutes when Callum worked hard on the right, got a cross in which eluded Euan on the front post but was met by Tyler on the back post but unfortunately his shot went over the bar.

This was soon followed by a Euan corner that was met on the run by Harrison but unfortunately his header went narrowly wide of the upright.

As half time approached, some determined tackling by Beckham and two more fine saves by Conor kept Bassett in the match.

Half Time: 0-2

Following what must have been a strong half time talk and with Alanah and Lewis reunited in defence, the team showed a little more resilience at the start of the second half and the first 5 minutes passed without another attempt on the Bassett goal. On 7 minutes Bassett found themselves 3 on 2 as Callum advanced the ball from midfield. The eventual shot was comfortably saved by the Lydiard keeper.

The next 5 minutes saw Lydiard take the game beyond Bassett's reach. A couple of team changes and some gifted opportunities meant Lydiard were 0-5 up with less than 15 minutes of the second half gone.

The closest Bassett got to the Lydiard goal was on 22 minutes when Jordan worked hard on the left, shot from a narrow angle and hit the post.

Full-time: 0-5

Match Analysis: Lydiard Youth played some quality football and Bassett never truly recovered from the torrid opening ten minutes. This is a defining moment in the season for the team. With just 3 league games and the cup final remaining the team and supporters need to come back from this defeat strongly and show the spirit that has been on display during the rest of the season. Individuals won't win any game for Bassett, the team will.

Player of the Match: Despite his best endeavours, he could not keep Bassett in the game. Today's POTM goes to Conor for some fine saves.
