Change in formation pays dividends

This weeks' game saw Bassett's first visit of the season to a very windy Supermarine. The decision was made, based on results from previous week's results, to change the formation around and experiment a little by playing two defenders instead of the usual three, keep the midfield three and push a player forwards to play as an out and out striker.

The game began with a Bassett kick off won by today's captain Joe Paish. Almost immediately Bassett were on the attack with the midfield three of Ben, Jack and Callum pushing forward to keep Westlea in their own half, but things didn't seem to flow as they usually do. Thankfully they soon settled into the game with most of the success coming down the right wing. Bassett were putting together some nice switches of play and were passing the ball around nicely. They were rewarded with a well-worked goal coming from play switched to the left, where Sam Lowkis had moved in space. Sam fired the ball across in front of the goalkeeper only for Ben Mattick to touch the ball back across with his first touch (he assures me it was a move straight from the training ground!!) for Callum Meehan to finish off with a left footed shot into the roof of the net.

The goal spurred Bassett on and it was only a few minutes later, from another flowing move that Ben Mattick managed to slot the ball home neatly from a Callum Meehan cross. I think it is fair to say Westlea threatened a little during the first half with a few moves through the middle with Joe Viveash making a good save to his top left from the resulting corner. Again Bassett pushed and probed and it was only Westlea's goalkeeper who managed to keep the score line at 2-0 with a number of fine saves. Overall it was a good first half with some nice moves and two good goals.

Bassett came out after half time with the wind behind them. The second half saw the return of Tyler Amos and Jake Matthews, on a break from their duties with Swindon Town. The boys soon slotted back into their old roles in midfield and showed great confidence at being back in the team. The second half also saw Ollie Rigby come on in defence to partner Joe Paish and, with Sam Lowkis being rested; Jack Peake was pushed up into the forward role with Callum Meehan on the right wing. Again the majority of the second half was played in the opposing half. Tyler and Jake certainly showed their confidence with some lovely interchanging of play and Tyler hitting some nice cross field passes. The boys were working well and again, only the Westlea goalkeeper kept the score line as it was. Westlea, pushed on by the keepers heroics pushed forwards; gaining a couple of corners and half chances. They were awarded a penalty when Jake Matthews was judged to have handled the ball in his own area. The penalty was saved and held brilliantly by a very confident looking Joe Viveash. Possession and pressure switched back and forth between the teams. With ten minutes to go Ban Matthick, Sam Lowkis and Scott Walduck came on for Callum Meehan, Jack Peake and Joe Paish respectively. The exchanges of play continued with more missed chances from Bassett until Jake, Tyler and Ben combined for Tyler to receive the ball on the left beating one player and then firing home at the near post. After the restart Bassett pushed forward for more and were almost hit on the break with Joe Viveash again pulling off a stunning save to deny the Westlea striker.

Man of the Match is: Joe Viveash – for a solid display and making three outstanding saves to keep a clean sheet!
