More positive showing from Bassett

This week's game saw Purton 'A' visit Ballard's Ash. After a good, but largely unproductive start to the season, Bassett needed a good result. Bassett showed great promise from the start with Sam Lowkis and Ben Matthick causing problems down the wings and Jack Peake spearheading the attack through the middle. It was the combination of good work and a flowing move put together by the two wingers that led to Sam finding space in the middle of the park. He hit a swerving shot to the top left of the goal, which left the Purton keeper sprawling. Purton came forward after the goal but with little to show other than rattling the crossbar, thankfully our new defence of Joe Paish, Ollie Rigby and Scott Walduck were well up to the challenge, winning and distributing the ball with great confidence, and some more good work again from the forward line led to Sam getting his second, slotting the ball home deftly at the Purton keepers right hand post.

In the second half Callum Meehan replaced Jack Peake in central midfield. Purton again took the game to Bassett during the second period. Only more spirited defending from our rear guard kept Purton from scoring, and yet still Bassett pressed forward, pressing well down each wing with Scott Walduck overlapping down the left and carving a number of chances. With 15 minutes remaining the Walduck, Lowkis combination finally got results with Sam squeezing of a shot, which was dropped by the goalkeeper and the quick thinking Ben Matthick tapped the ball into an empty net. In the remaining minutes Bassett again looked dangerous, breaking down both wings and some good work in the middle by Callum Meehan putting increasing pressure on the Purton defence. Over all, this was a much more positive performance this week.
