Overhead kick sends Bassett to defeat

Right from the outset of this game Stratton to the game to Bassett, with much of the first half being dominated by the Swindon side. Bassett were made to work extremely hard to prevent conceding and resorted to counter attacking whenever possible. Even when the chance to attack came they failed to use the ball as effectively as in their previous game. Completely against the run of play Bassett took the lead, after some good work down the right the ball went out for a corner on the Bassett left. The resulting corner was only half cleared and Scott Walduck hit a thunderous half volley from twelve yards into the roof of the Stratton net. Stratton came back as strongly as before and had a few useful chances. Bassett's defence held fast until a few minutes before half time when a shot ricocheted of two Scott Walduck followed by Joe Paish and Joe Viveash in goal, who did well to get as much of a hand to it as he did, ended up somehow in the back of the net.

Half time saw a change in Bassett's fortunes. They pressed forward with renewed purpose pushing Stratton back and holding them in their own half for lengthy periods. Bassett looked increasingly confident, which showed in the attacking play with Scott Walduck making forward runs to become a fourth forward with Ollie Rigby and Joe Paish standing sentry in defence. The increased pressure came to fruition when another Callum Meehan and Sam Lowkis combination, which had been effective since the restart, ended in the simplest of tap-ins for Ben Matthick at the far post. Again Stratton pressed with a period of good possession trying to find a gap in the defensive line ending with a scuffed shot, which was scrambled over the Bassett goal line. The goal sparked new life into the home side exchanging possession and attempting to catch each other on the counter attack. A move down the Stratton right ended with a cross ballooning off of Scott Walduck, which caught the rest of the Bassett back line by flat footed. The resulting chance was converted by the Stratton forward, who, with his back to goal performed the cheekiest of overhead kicks from 3 yards out leaving poor Joe Viveash, who had given his usual faultless display between the sticks with no chance.
