Bassett lose to league leaders

Bassett entertained the league leaders for the final game of October, in what was always going to be a tough game for the home side. Both sides started the game in an attacking mood and it was only the very good defensive line of the Bassett back four, repeatedly catching Stratton offside, which prevented the visitors from taking the lead.

Unfortunately Bassett were eventually caught out when a very good through ball found the Stratton striker, who then outpaced the Bassett defence to go on and score a very well taken goal. Stratton scored a second before the end of the first half, with a lucky deflection of the home teams keeper.

The second half was played with the same pace and conviction as the first. Stratton didn't have it all their own way, with the home team pressing for that elusive first goal. Tom James had two excellent chances, only to see each attempt foiled by a last ditch save by the Stratton defence.

Stratton were gifted an own goal, when Sean Leeke sliced a clearance to put the ball past his keeper. They then added a fourth before Bassett pulled one back, when Sean Leeke was fouled in the box as Bassett were taking a corner kick. He duly put away the awarded penalty.

Both sides played some very good football and the home side can take comfort from a very good performance, ensuring that Stratton had to work very hard for the three points.
