A few blocked plug holes tonight

It was a challenge to watch this match through the dark, rainy, muddy, cold climate, pleasingly the pitch allowed the teams to compete without too many leg jarring slip ups. The Bassett team were anticipating a good win after their previous experience of playing Penhill. However, the opposition had developed significantly since their last encounter.

After 5 minutes of Bassett attack, Harry Fitzwilliams scored, perhaps this would mean we could repeat a substantial win. We maintained pressure upon the penhill goal but our effforts were frustrated by some inconsistent passing and also for zealous application of the offside flag.

Ben Curtis made some excellent runs only to be pushed off the ball by ther defence. The opposition number six player ran as if he were a rat eagerly seeking a drain pipe, his turn of speed thwarted several attacks.

Bassett started the second half with a 1-0 lead. Soon, Chris Edwards made a critical save. One of many during the afternoon in partnership with Matt Buckingam and Brett Carr.

Ben Curtis made a good run at their goal only to be fouled by a tackle from behind. This resulted in a free kick which saw James Terry power the ball over their goal. Shortly after Harry Fitzwilliams scored aain after a good run. A few more good saves from Chris Edwards gave time for Ben, Harry and Tom Dean to make a good co-ordinated attack in which Ben passed very unselfishly to Harry who successively ensured three goals were now in Bassetts possession.

In the closing minutes, fuelled by frustration, their goallie made a run to the Basssett end to join in a corner kick attempt on goal. Fortunately he wasted his time and returned empty handed. No sign of Bassett giving up.

At full time, the score line was 3-0. Again, the man of the match parents vote was a close one, but with a small margin Chris Edwards was the one. The second half had been fought over well by Bassett allaying fears that fatigue would take it's toll. No doubt many bathroom plug holes would be blocked this evening!
