Bassett fall to another defeat

A second defeat, but what a great display from Wootton Bassett. The boys battled away against a tough Brunel side that finished high up in the 1st division last season.

With Ben Curtis playing in midfield in an attempt to match Brunel's physical presence Bassett competed for every ball and managed to keep the visitors way from goal throughout the 1st period. Brunel had the bulk of possession but a well marshalled defence limited the away side to long range efforts and half chances. The longer the half went on the more composed we looked and Bassett gradually started to create chances of their own.

After the interval the blustery conditions meant that a cross from Brunel's left side turned into a shot leaving Jack Mason stranded as it sailed into the far corner. From that moment the game became end to end stuff with both sides attacking and defending in equal measures. With 15 minutes remaining the Brunel keeper flapped at a cross from Bassett's left, the ball went loose and Harry Fitz crashed his shot into the roof of the net, only for the ref to rule the 'goal' out for a foul on the keeper. We continued to push on but fell to a sucker punch when Jack Mason and Dan McCarthey looked to have dealt with a good cross but unfortunately a Brunel striker tucked the ball in.

The goal of the game came from Bassett. We gained possession next to our left corner flag and with about 12 passes Jamie Brown walked the ball over the Brunel goal line. A truly great goal.

Another defeat but a great performance.
