No Heart, No Passion, No Goals, Just Nothing

Kayte Lane, 5th October 2002

Bassett Town went to Bishops Cleeve on Saturday looking to build on their mid-week win and end their recent run of bad form. What they got was a shock - an 8-0 drubbing by one of the Hellenic Premier Divisions mid-table teams.

Bassett came out with a nearly full strength side, which didn't include the likes of Allan Pluckrose (injured), Mark Vaughan (suspended), Paul Garbutt (work commitments) and Rich Stevens (injury).

Both teams were scrambling around for the ball in the first few minutes before Bishops Cleeve broke the deadlock in the 7th minute when a defensive error allowed Steve Cleal to put the ball away neatly.

Bassett were struck again when in the 13th minute when Kevin Slack put the ball away.

Bassett never really looked like making a shot on target in the first half but they did have a couple of good attacks before Bishops Cleeve made it 3 nil when Richard Clarke headed in a free kick which could have been dealt with by the Bassett defence.

Cleeve made it four before the half hour mark when in the 29th minute Kevin Slack shot home from the edge of the area on the turn.

Bishops Cleeve could have made it more before half time but they didn't take their chances.

Bassett went into the break four goals down and looked out of the game at the break.

Bassett came out in the second half looking to get at least one goal.

Bishops Cleeve started the brighter in the second half grabbing their 5th goal when Andy Tucker scored into an open goal after Steve Hale parried the first shot that came in.

Bassett tried changing things in the 59th minute bringing Neil Bridges on for Paul Patel and then in the 62nd minute bringing Stu Hemsley on for Paul Carson.

Cleeve made it 6-0 in the 70th minute when James Hancox put the ball away from close range. Bishops Cleeve made their first substitute after the goal bringing Hancox off.

Two minutes later Kevin Slack got his hat trick when he blasted home from the edge of the area. Slack, a player of quality, could really play a higher standard of football, as he was Bishops Cleeve's lethal weapon.

Mitch Council came off for Cleeve in the 76th minute, and his replacement made it eight in injury time.

A very poor performance from Bassett that should be forgotten. Now Pete Yeardley's men need to look ahead to a tough home clash against top of the table North Leigh on Tuesday in the Floodlit Cup 1st Round.

Managers Man of the Match: NO ONE

Scoop Rating: 1/10 – A dreadful performance by Bassett which should be forgotten. God knows how Pete and Mick will be feeling after Saturday's match.
