Girls’ Section Review: County Cup hat trick!

Sunday 11th October 2026

There was a hat trick of County Cup wins for Royal Wootton Bassett Town's Girls' Section sides this weekend as the Under 12s, 14s and 15s all advanced to the quarter final stage.

Congratulations to all three teams as they took another step towards potential silverware!

Under 15s

The Under 15s booked their place in the next round of the County Cup after a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Durrington Seahawks, following a 2-2 draw after normal time.

Bassett started well, defending into the wind, and took the lead after just three minutes. Some excellent play down the wing allowed Sienna to find Ava, who tapped home to make it 1-0.

Bassett continued to play well, defending solidly and limiting Durrington's opportunities. Poppy impressed in midfield, creating attacking opportunities, while Mia came close to doubling the lead just before half-time but fired narrowly wide.

The second half proved much more difficult, with poor decision-making in the final third preventing Bassett from creating enough clear-cut chances.

A defensive mistake allowed Durrington to equalise, and suddenly the tie was level at 1-1.

With ten minutes remaining, Sienna found Eryn inside the penalty area, whose flick picked out Lily Lloyd at the back post to fire home and restore Bassett's lead at 2-1.

However, Bassett were unable to hold on, as Durrington converted from a corner at the far post to make it 2-2 and send the tie to penalties.

The shootout began nervously, with Ava seeing her penalty saved and Mia firing over. Chloe then kept Bassett in the contest with an excellent save. Sienna, Poppy and Izzy all converted, while Durrington also found the net to take the shootout into sudden death at 3-3.

Elise stepped up and struck the crossbar, but the ball crossed the line to give Bassett a 4-3 lead. Chloe then produced another crucial save from Durrington's final penalty to secure the victory!

Player of the Match votes went to Poppy for her quality in midfield and Chloe for her outstanding contribution to getting Bassett over the line and into the next round. Chloe's crucial penalty saves proved decisive in a tense shootout.

It certainly wasn't Bassett's best performance, but cup football is all about finding a way through, and the girls showed resilience to get over the line. They booked their place in the next round after a dramatic afternoon.

Under 14s

The Under 14s secured an incredible 8-1 victory over Derry Hill United Flames to book their place in the next round of the County Cup.

The girls made a flying start, with Christina opening the scoring after just five minutes with a fantastic long-range effort. She soon doubled her tally after capitalising on a goalkeeping error before Georgia made it 3-0 with a shot through the keeper's legs. Christina then completed a superb first-half hat-trick with another stunning strike into the roof of the net, giving Bassett a commanding 4-0 lead at half-time.

Following five substitutions, Bassett took a little time to settle but soon found their rhythm again.

Kacy grabbed her first goal of the season to make it 5-0, before a Gracie effort was turned into the net by a Derry Hill defender. Kacy then completed her brace from a brilliant Gracie cross to make it 7-0. Chloe rounded off the scoring for Bassett with a well-deserved rebound finish after the keeper saved her long-range effort.

Derry Hill grabbed a consolation goal, but Bassett ran out convincing 8-1 winners.

The girls were fantastic throughout, showing tremendous effort, determination and teamwork.

Player of the Match went to Kacy, deservedly recognised by the Derry Hill team after her two goals and tireless midfield performance.

Under 12s

The Under 12s booked their place in the next round of the County Cup with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Marlborough Youth Merlins at home.

It was arguably one of the most dominant 1-0 wins you could see, with the girls producing some outstanding football despite the challenging pitch making clear-cut chances difficult to come by.

Annabelle scored an absolute peach to get the ball rolling in front of goal, however no more goals were to hit the back of the net despite the dominant performance.

Bassett experimented with a back three, a formation that could prove useful at different stages of the season, and the girls adapted brilliantly, looking solid defensively throughout.

Annabelle was deservedly awarded Player of the Match by the opposition for her excellent performance, while Katie received our Player of the Match award after making her debut and showing great bravery in wanting to get on the ball.

Under 17s

In the league the Under 17s faced a tough away trip against leaders Tyrone Mings Phoenix and unfortunately suffered an 8-1 defeat.

After missing last week through illness, Esme Loveday returned to the side and made an immediate impact, converting a great opportunity to get Bassett on the scoresheet. The goal came following a perfectly weighted, pinpoint ball over the top from Eliza, who picked out Esme brilliantly.

Unfortunately, Tyrone Mings proved a difficult opponent, dominating much of the game and showing why they sat at the top of the table.

Bassett worked hard and created a few promising opportunities of their own but were unable to take advantage of those chances.

Despite their efforts, the hosts proved clinical in front of goal and went on to secure victory.

Although the result was disappointing, the girls could take positives from Esme's return and the goal created through excellent link-up play with Eliza.

Attention now turns to a crucial home fixture next week against Malmesbury Victoria. The girls will be looking to regroup, learn from the experience and bounce back with a big performance in an important game.
