For their 2-1 victory over Welton Rovers, their Western League opponents, Wootton Bassett were greatly indebted to the opportunism of Pearce, who, as a left winger, at one time assisted Swindon Town. He put his side on the victory path with a goal from a corner after 20 minutes and also scored their second after the interval.

One of the surprises of the week was Wootton Bassett's unexpected victory over Welton Rovers, the Western League side. They gained the lead after twenty minutes and never looked like letting it go.
