Dramatic end as Bassett come back to earn derby draw

Taxtful Southbank, Sunday 9th March 2025

Royal Wootton Bassett Town twice came from behind to earn a draw away at Wiltshire rivals Corsham Town in the South West Regional Women's Football League Division One North.

While Bassett were hoping for a repeat of the outcome when the teams met for the first this season in early February, Adam Wood's side can be content with the point - especially in light of the disappointing defeat at Olveston United last week.

Their performance against Corsham was arguably again not their best. But Bassett demonstrated their character as they twice hauled themselves back onto level terms.

The teams traded chances in the opening exchanges, with Caitlin Brooks coming closest for Bassett as she headed wide.

But Corsham drew first blood when Chauntine Lyons - somewhat against the run of play - got the better of Millie Powell.

Bassett pulled level with time winding down in the first half as captain Laura Jefferies swung in a delivery that beat Lily Lewis at the far post.

However, parity did not last long as Shannon Redhouse outpaced the Bassett defence before squaring to an unmarked Alice Blackman to slot in at the far post.

Corsham therefore went into half time with their noses in front.

And they looked set to hold on for victory.

Bassett's best second half opportunities came on the hour when Maddy Elliott's surging run opened up space to shoot but she fired straight at Lewis.

Elliott again shot straight at the 'keeper, who spilled the ball, after being played in by Honor Fraser with time running out.

But, staring at a second straight defeat to a side beneath them in the table, Bassett were able to find a late equaliser.

Jefferies delivered a free kick to the far post where Hannah Gulliver was on hand to steer home.

Corsham did almost snatch the points as Gabby Menghini struck the crossbar with thirty seconds to go.

But, after showing plenty of resolve, Bassett were due some luck and a point was their reward.

The result leaves Bassett four points behind Cirencester Town (with three games in hand still to play) going into next weekend's important visit to the current third place side.

That's a much more manageable deficit than a six point one.
