Five star Bassett thrash St Vallier

Sustain Stadium, Sunday 9th February 2025

Royal Wootton Bassett Town secured a season double over St Vallier with a convincing 5-1 home victory in the South West Regional Women's Football League Division One North.

The Goodright sisters were key to Bassett's success with Lucy scoring twice and Natalie also on target as Adam Wood's side recorded back-to-back league wins for only the second time this season.

The Goodrights struck after Bassett had already established a deserved two goal lead.

Maddy Elliott opened the scoring inside the opening five minutes, seizing on a defensive mistake before firing a dipping drive from the edge of the area that found its way into the net.

Hannah Gulliver made it 2-0 on the half hour mark, winning a penalty that she emphatically put away.

Natalie Goodright then made it 3-0 on the stroke of half time, firing in when a corner fell to her in the box.

It was over to sister Lucy to extend Bassett's lead further after the restart.

A half time substitute, she quickly made her mark, coolly slotting in after Elliott had squared to her.

Elliott was having an excellent game and almost grabbed her second of the match after receiving a Gulliver cross. However she would be denied by the crossbar.

The visitors were able to pull one back when Ruby Saunders teed up Rossana Rocha to finish.

But Lucy Goodright ensured Bassett had a handful late on. Gulliver opened up the St Vallier defence with a delightful through ball that Kat Bach latched onto and she squared to Goodright who made no mistake.

Bassett will be hoping that this will be the second in a string of league victories as they jockey with Cirencester Town and Bitton for second spot behind runaway leaders Gloucester City.

Next up though is a date with Swindon Town in the semi finals of the Wiltshire Women's Cup - a game taking place at the Sustain Stadium and one that should be well worth watching.
